KayOscars 2005 – presented by Kayos casting directors, AV Network & Ultrasound
The
KayOscars 2005, presented by Kayos Casting Directors, AV Network and
Ultrasound were held on October 7th at the CTICC. Supported by a huge
cross section of people from the film & TV industry, the evening
was a resounding success, filled with glitz, glamour, buskers and
general frivolity. The event has grown from a humble end of season
'thank you' party by Kayos Casting Directors, into a glamorous,
uplifting, industry-supported charity drive and empowering initiative.
Sending up the formal Oscar Awards format, the tongue in cheek,
light-hearted awards ceremony sets out to honour the local tv 'heroes',
the actors, models and characters who all contribute to the enormous
success of the Cape Town television commercial industry.
As
usual the nominees arrived in limousines and guests and nominees alike
were ushered up the red carpet by screaming fans and flashing cameras
with their arrival interviews being live-streamed into the venue. This
year, the screaming fans and paparazzi were none other than the
youngsters from two of the charities who benefited from the evening’s
proceeds, the MylifE Project & the UPliftment Programme.
After rehearsing for a month, the enthusiastic 'youth at risk' had
traffic coming to a standstill to find out what the commotion was
about. Meanwhile, inside the venue, guests were entertained by other
talented youngsters miming, clowning and being statues.
Once
again the industry came together in a display of amazing generosity,
sponsoring the entire event right from the flowers, DJ & awards
through to the red & orange plastic chickens. Even the host of the
show, comedian Cokey Falkow, donated his time and energy. He was an
enormous hit with the audience, who loved his kooky and unorthodox
approach to presenting the awards. The slick production commenced with
some brief but somewhat 'altered' appearances by Russell Crow, Daniel
Day Lewis & Mr Incredible. The nominees were then introduced with a
showing of their actual winning auditions, followed by the final
commercials. Winners included children, stunt men, local celebs like
Tanit Phoenix and Big Bad Bruce of Vodacom fame and a host of SA film
and TV commercial talent, their agents, advertising agencies and the
cities' top film production companies.
Three charities
benefited from this years proceeds. The UPliftment Programme, MylifE
Project & the Theatre Benevolent Fund and their coffers received a
healthy boost when Peter Gird of Peter Gird Productions spontaneously
doubled his already generous sponsorship. Supported by
600 people, the evening was a celebration and affirmation of the spirit
of reciprocity and generosity that characterises the industry. A
proudly South African event that is just growing from strength to
strength!
