Why The Virtual Studio?

The Kayos Virtual Studio

A win-win-win auditioning solution for all.

You think COVID was 2020’s biggest problem? Think twice. It was also one of the 3 hottest years in history. The IPCC warns that we’re less than 10 years away from irreversible mistakes.

In the words of Greta Thunberg: “now is not the time to speak politely...now is the time to speak clearly.”

It's time for serious change.

But how does this impact the global casting industry?

Transport is one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gasses. If people stay at home, it will make the casting process a lot more earth-friendly. Kayos alone had at least 100 vehicles travelling 4000km a day. This equated to around 1 ton of CO2 emissions for each studio day. Times that number by all global castings daily and the total amount of emissions is alarming - especially for the first round of casting.

The solution: take the studio to the talent. We have over 24 years of experience running up to 4 physical studios a day. Adding a greener, virtual version makes sense. Our service and software is helping casting directors  audition talent from wherever they are in the world with a squeaky clean carbon footprint.

We have already auditioned over 11 000 happy artists in the Virtual Studio while saving tons of CO2 emissions.

We also began to notice other benefits that went beyond the environment. Casting directors, talent, producers and directors have all been positively affected – scroll down to see how.

We cannot go back to ‘business as usual’ post-pandemic. The Kayos Virtual Studio is a small solution to a big problem – not only for our industry’s survival, but for our planet’s.

Worried that you won’t find the best talent due to location restrictions?

In traditional casting, what you see is what you get – or in the case of castings, who you see is who you get. You’re only able to see artists who can get to the casting location on the day, which means that you may not have access to the best person for the job. Casting in the Virtual Studio means you can audition all available artists, anywhere in the world, in minutes.

Tired of the hassle of traditional self-tapes?

Coordinating and presenting a great self-tape casting can be time-consuming and frustrating. Bad lighting, strange backgrounds and misinterpretations of the brief are serious realities. Sifting through a pile of audition videos in various formats takes up valuable time. Often only 60% - 70% of tapes are presentable by your deadline. And of course many tapes arrive too late to present. The Virtual Studio gets the casting director back where they belong, doing what they do best. Ensuring their clients receive the best possible auditions, personally directed in record time.

Looking for greener casting solutions?

It is estimated that an 8-hour physical studio session with 60 people attending produces around 1 ton of CO2 emissions from travel. We’d have to plant 15 trees to reduce our carbon footprint from just one day of casting. Casting in the Virtual Studio means that no-one needs to travel to a physical casing which helps us reduce carbon emissions and, in turn, we all play a part in slowing down the effects of climate change.

Want to have a more hands-on approach to direct a casting?

It is a casting director’s job to make talent feel comfortable and work with them to produce their best performance for a client. The Virtual Studio allows casting directors to do their job when directing the casting and offers a space for fresh in situ castings. If required, casting directors and talent can bring the set to the studio and create scenarios in talents’ own homes to replicate kitchen, garden, lounge or bedroom scenes etc.
